Playa Del Carmen, usually simply called Playa, is a popular tourist stop and cruise ship port. The area still retains a local feel, while offering everything a traveler could want. And of course, Playa del Carmen is one of the best places in the world to dive. The area features dives that are perfect for beginners, and many dives that offer more challenging experiences. Here is a list of five places that you absolutely must visit if you are planning to scuba in Playa del Carmen.

Dos Ojos

This beautiful cenote is a day trip from Playa del Carmen, and it’s well worth your time. The name means “two eyes,” because it is a two room system with a bat cave and a huge main cavern. The wide open entrance makes this a great beginner’s dive because it is well-lit and usually doesn’t cause a feeling claustrophobia. This is one of the most popular locations for scuba in Playa del Carmen, so you are very likely to meet some compatible adventurers on this dive.

Chac Mool

This cenote is named after a Mayan god, and it can be an intimidating challenge. If you’re up for this adventure, be prepared for a dark dive with tight enclosures. Those experienced divers who brave this cenote will see some of the most beautiful underwater rock formations imaginable.

Sabalos or Moc Che

Sabalos is the perfect open water area for a beginner to explore. The healthy reef is home to large amounts of fish, particularly the schools of Sabalos that inspired the name. There are also many other beautiful shallow reefs that are perfect for beginner to intermediate scuba divers in Playa del Carmen. Tortuga Reef

This dive is extremely popular, and it has to be included in Playa del Carmen’s top five because of the amazing wildlife sightings. Not only the beautiful sea turtles for which it’s named, but also a good population of sharks and smaller fish as well. This is a gentle dive guided by the current, perfect for intermediate divers.
